5 Stars Norton 360 2.0
We have used Norton since the begaining of computers. I’v used them with all my computers Peter Norton’s products have always preformed prefectly.

1 Star Busy-Body Time Waster
I have approx. 200 days left on the subscription and so will see if things improve. The program craps out periodically, requiring a removal and then reinstallation. It also periodically knocks out my sound system, requiring reinstallation of the Extigy driver. The FireWall doesn’t tell you when it is “protecting” you, and so you waste time figuring out why an external drive doesn’t work or a network computer can’t be reached. Technical support is decent–but you have to wait in line with 62 other people ahead of you.

1 Star Do not buy
I just bought Norton 360 Premier 2.0 and it is a total piece of junk. It has been two days that I am trying to install it on a Windows XP sp2 system to no avail. It hangs at some point on the installation and nothing happens for hours. I even contacted their support via their chat line with some gentleman in India — which took a while to get to being the 30th person in the queue — just to install a freaking software. He “took over” my system via a remote session and who knows what he was doing (I could see the mouse moving and what not) and after spending HOURS and a couple of remote reboots I lost him and the remote session was not reestablished again. So I was back where I was with a remote controlled software somewhere installed on my computer (good luck finding that one).

I tried to uninstall the aborted software, again, to no avail. Ended up having to download special software to remove Norton products. Here is my question: is it worth the hassle and your time and money to go though this abuse? Even if this software is installed I wouldn’t have a warm and fuzzy that this piece of junk can protect my system. Bottom line: continue with your research and don’t buy this garbage.

4 Stars so far so good!!
Received product on time, way less expensive than other places, CD was installed in 30 minutes without no problems what so ever (granted I don’t know too much about computers) Installed in a XP system. Using the same for over a month now. Hope this help.

1 Star Best to avoid, unless your willing to mess with it
Some elements work well after you fiddle with them. The defaults appear to have been set by monkeys.

DO NOT USE THE BACK-UP!! It will take your system and grind it to a halt. It will not stop unless you reboot. It is BAD, as in this should never have been released bad.

FWIW, I am very experienced with PC’s and have been computing for over 20 years.

3 Stars Much Improved for 2009, But At Least One Fatal Flaw Rears Its Head
After years of running Norton Antivirus products, with ever increasing demands on system resources, as well as slowing down the machines these products were installed on, the completely rewritten version of Norton Internet Security 2009 has gone a very long way towards correcting years of bloatware code that was made worse with every new release.

This version installs fast, runs fast, and is almost entirely unobtrusive, with one very major exception.

This software will break your home or small business network.

In a well-documented bug first discovered in October 2008, Norton interferes with, and eventually blocks access to other machines on your home network. Norton admits there is a problem, and has been stalling customers for months with promises for a fix, yet keeps pushing the release date out further and further.

Install Norton 2009, and eventually all of the computers on your home network under My Network Places will disappear, and will eventually be blocked from access. While you can frequently manually reach your other networked machines by typing their addresses directly into an address bar, software that depends on access to your other networked machines directly (index, backup, small business collaboration tools, etc.) usually cannot work this way, and you are effectively cut off from using those applications. Worse, over time, Norton will begin periodically cutting off access to your networked machines. Suddenly file copying between machines fails, extremely long delays in accessing other computers on your network occurs, and your frustration level mounts.

Norton admits the only current solution to this problem is to completely uninstall Norton 2009 Antivirus/Internet Security products. There is no other workaround.

Worse yet, the responsiveness of the company to major software bugs has been less than acceptable. It literally takes months for even the most urgent bugs to get identified, corrected, and then put through a laborious test procedure. To add insult to injury, it then takes up to six additional weeks for the fixed code to be incorporated into their slow update release schedule and finally reach every customer.

This truly mars an otherwise promising product and makes it an unacceptable option for those dependent on networked machines, such as a home or small business network. If you are dependent on your network to access remote hard drives or collaborate in an office environment, Norton 2009 products are absolutely not acceptable for use and I strongly recommend you look elsewhere until the company finally fixes the problem.

A very lengthy discussion about this problem can be found on the Norton Community Forum. Simply search for “NAV blocks access to hard disk.” The later discussions in the thread contain the most pertinent information.

Yes it did install - OK. That’s the only reason it got 2 stars not one.

Mine main system was working fine until Norton AV 2009 (I have not used Norton software since the 90’s.) I thought I’ll try it again for the first time. Probs. after probs., I am going to reinstall my system again MINUS Norton AV 2009 and reinstall AVV and we will see if it’s the software or the hard drive… BUT I’m thinking it Norton AV 2009 is the prob. I have another partition with Ubuntu/Linux .. Yes I know why are you using Windows XP pro? Because of 90% of all software is written for Windows. I am playing “King Bounty the Ledgend” Side note: great game 4.5 stars, (I’m TRYING to play King Bounty)

2 Stars PRODUCT IS SO, SO
I’ve used this product on 2 laptops and a desk top. This version isn’t as easy. I find the computer freezes much too much now, so I give it a half and half

4 Stars Norton 360 better than expected.
I was really impressed with Norton 360. It found a trojan and fixed it right away. I had McAfee beforehead and it did not detect this problem. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in protecting their laptop or desktop.

1 Star Don’t Waste Your Time or Your Money
I’ve been using Norton 360 for over a year for two features, anti-virus protection, and an online back up service. Both of these failed.

My wife’s laptop with Norton 360 installed and up to date virus definitions got infected with a virus in December. The virus took over Norton and disabled it. I reinstalled Norton, updated the virus definitions, and tried to root out the virus. Norton didn’t help. I checked their online support and indeed they couldn’t provide a fix.

At this point I reformatted the drive and reinstalled Windows and all applications, including Norton 360. I began receiving Windows fatal errors, which pointed to Norton. Their online support claimed it was a memory problem.

I replaced the memory, and for good measure replaced the hard drive. Another new install. Everything worked fine until I installed Norton 360. I was then receiving continual fatal errors. I uninstalled Norton, switched to McAfee, and everything works fine.

I then went about trying to restore the data from Norton’s online back up site. I needed to do so from a different computer , because Norton crashed the original computer at boot-up. I could retrieve a limited amount of data, but not all of it. I spent more than 7 hours over 4 calls with Norton support. Their support was very poor and they frequently provided wrong information.

I was finally told that I could only restore the data back to the original machine from which the data came, and it had to be running Norton 360. I explained that the original machine crashed every time I loaded 360, so I need to download the files to another machine and then transfer them manually. Their plan was to completely change the settings on my new machine to be identical to the original machine, including serial number, etc. I then decided to ask for a refund.

Well, it ends up a refund is not so easy if you bought the software from a retailer. If you bought online from Norton they will give you a refund immediately, but if you bought from a retailer you need all original packaging, original receipt, everything.

I’ve purchased a lot of Norton products over the years and they could see when I installed, what the product key is, etc., but that was not good enough. Their answer was “don’t buy from a retailer, buy online directly from Norton.”

So I wasted weeks of my time troubleshooting, hours on the phone with Norton, and bought unnecessary hardware, all thanks to Norton.

4 Stars Norton 360 has been quite dependable
I have been using Norton 360 for about fourteen months and just renewed my susbscription. I found the product to be very reliable. It automatically updates virus definitions and performs scans and every operation that I have programmed it to do. The only aspect I am not certain about is how good it is in stopping ads from infiltrating my system. Therefore, in addition to Norton 360, I have had to download and periodically run other adware programs.

My one advice to new users is to not update to version 3.0 when it comes out. I believe it is preferable to wait until the subscription expires and then update. And, when updating, it is best to completely uninstall the old version before installing the new.

5 Stars Great price.
Purchasing Norton 360 through Amazon rather than at the local computer store saved me over $20. This is the security recommended by my computer and I wanted to renew my introductory free 3-month subscription but even renewing on line would have cost me $10 more. I think I got a great deal.
