1 Star Frustrating
I have used Norton products for years. With the good reviews I decided to upgrade my expiring products and even purchased a 5 pack to install on the company computers……… big mistake.

The download was filled with fancy screens and instructions that were not consistent with the options offered. Normally this would only be a minor point as the right combination would appear. However, the new one refused to load claiming a thread error.

After multiple attempts I tried the online help. I started as #20 in line and v e r y

slowly progressed to 1# at which point I was connected to a tech who was probably in India and also working on a couple of other customers. He took me through the steps to get him inside my computer but that failed. He then made it possible for me to download the software. However, the installation immediately ate my existing norton (together with all the custom settings) and then wanted to reboot the system which the tech said was essential. The only problem is that after the installation the computer would not shut down normally and I needed to shut it down manually . Of course when it rebooted it had lost all the info about my contact with the tech and my session number was no longer valid.

Thinking that this was ok since I had norton I proceeded to open Norton. However, there is no opportunity to insert my user information , only space to accept another credit charge.

Total loss-about 3 hours and loss of existing security.

Next day - no response to my written request for help.

Survival in today’s market is all about customer service and here it seems to have taken on the character of vaporservice.

5 Stars works like it should
this year’s version installed easier than 2008 and seems to run more efficient on my computers. I installed it on a vista system with a duo core CPU - went great. Then moved on to an XP system with a Pentium 4 - also installed great. Then moved to another XP system with a duo core CPU - no problems. I was happier with how well it installed and is running for 2009 than the 2008.

The 2009 version is MUCH faster - to the point where I am leaving all options enabled. The hit to the system appears to be minimal. The user interface is simpler and less confusing also. Big improvements all around.

Be aware that the engines underlying Internet Security 2009 and Norton 360 are reported to be different, with 360 using the older version (i.e., performance problems).

Norton Internet Security 2009 5-User

I have used Norton Antivirus for the past number of years and have been fairly satified with the level of protection, even if the customer support left a little to be desired. I decided to step up a bit and purchase Norton Internet Security 2009 because two of my computer’s subscriptions were running out, which in the newer versions leaves you UNPROTECTED!

Since I have 5 computers in the house and they were all coming due at different times, I decided to get the 5-user edition. After installing it on 2 computers and going to my Norton account, I seems that the subscription lasts only one year from the activation date of the FIRST computer subscription. I was very unhappy because two of the other computers still have at least 8-11 months of subscription left on them.

So if you buy a multi-user license, be aware that it looks like it will expire for all the computers at the same time. I would have never purchased this if I would have known that information.

I wrote in my review of Norton Internet Security 2008 that I used the product - but despised it. The hit to my system’s resources was just too great, and I turned much of it off as a result.

Norton Internet Security 2009 (3 User Edition) was easy to install and register. The security system scanned my harddrive immediately and resolving issues is quite simple. The protection offered is excellent, warning me immediately not to open an attachment if it detects the presence of a virus or worm.

2 Stars License Key Problems
System Mechanic has a lot of functionality. The registry cleaner isn’t that great but everything else is ok. Product is only worth a max of $25. Mechanic 8 is basically the same as Mechanic 7 except Mechanic 8 no longer has any Antivirus or Spyware sweeep. Beware: The activation key for Mechanic 7 and 8 does not clone. Mechanic detects that the geometry of the hard drive. If it detects a different hard drive geometry it wants a new activation key. Mechanic support may reactivate the key after a week or 2.

I have an older computer that was driving us nuts with it’s slow proformance even tho I’d defragmented etc. A computer ‘guru’ type friend suggested I try Iolo’s System Mechanic trial & I soon had a smoother running computer. I liked the way it reported problems vs. the Norton system I’d used for years, so as soon as Norton subscription was up, I purchased System Mechanic Professional. It was extremely easy to download from the internet & helped me through the uninstall of Norton. I then ran a total system scan & it found a virus that had not been discovered by my previous system. I am running XP.

1 Star I do not recommend: serious issues
This product is not good for the “experts” as they can do

most everything this product does manually, and perhaps they

do it using a safer approach.

This product is absolutely inappropriate for the novices and

beginners: the installation process will install everything

(e.g., main tools, firewall, etc), automates many of the

tasks, and essentially will take over, regularly

carrying tasks that are unnecessary, CPU-demanding,

and can cause many error prompts. Given the poor (and

essentially non-existing) customer services, the beginner user

will be on his/her own to uninstall, disable, or to live

with the annoying, and sometimes scary responses (e.g.,

indicators showing absolutely poor “health”, “security”

and “overall” status).

Perhaps reasonably experienced users can selectively

install and run certain tasks, and take appropriate

precautions (e.g., do a backup of registry before running

the registry cleaner).

However there is a MAJOR problem with the above: if you

plan to do the above during a convenient time (e.g., when

you do not have access to the Internet and would like to do

some PC clean up and maintenance), you are out of luck as

you will get the following message:

“System Mechanic Professional was unable to connect to the

Internet. System Mechanic Professional must validate its

subscription information by communicating with iolo.com

over the Internet. Typical reason for this include the

following: A third-party firewall or Internet security

blocked …”

In other words, you will have to have access to the

Internet in order to run this software. That is absolutely

unacceptable. Consider if your other software (e.g.,

Office, Adobe tools, editors, etc) would require the same.

Listen IOLO and System Mechanic “Professionals”: If

your tools require Internet connection to work all

the time (i.e., after activation/registration), please

boldly inform the customer. It is rather unintelligent

to require access to Internet once the software has

been registered and activated (as IOLO requires both

of these); it renders the tool worthless.

Minor: every time I launched my version of System Mechanic

Professional (version 8.5.1), it showed the following

I had several problems with my computer and finally resorted to asking my friend for help. She recommended system mechanics from [....]. I bought the product (System Mechanics Profesional) and downloaded it with relative ease. I’m not the most literate computer person in the world so I was proud of myself when the download was complete & on the first scan, it found a trojan and a virus. This product is the best I’ve ever used. If I can use it, anyone can use it!
