3 Stars Much Improved for 2009, But At Least One Fatal Flaw Rears Its Head
After years of running Norton Antivirus products, with ever increasing demands on system resources, as well as slowing down the machines these products were installed on, the completely rewritten version of Norton Internet Security 2009 has gone a very long way towards correcting years of bloatware code that was made worse with every new release.

This version installs fast, runs fast, and is almost entirely unobtrusive, with one very major exception.

This software will break your home or small business network.

In a well-documented bug first discovered in October 2008, Norton interferes with, and eventually blocks access to other machines on your home network. Norton admits there is a problem, and has been stalling customers for months with promises for a fix, yet keeps pushing the release date out further and further.

Install Norton 2009, and eventually all of the computers on your home network under My Network Places will disappear, and will eventually be blocked from access. While you can frequently manually reach your other networked machines by typing their addresses directly into an address bar, software that depends on access to your other networked machines directly (index, backup, small business collaboration tools, etc.) usually cannot work this way, and you are effectively cut off from using those applications. Worse, over time, Norton will begin periodically cutting off access to your networked machines. Suddenly file copying between machines fails, extremely long delays in accessing other computers on your network occurs, and your frustration level mounts.

Norton admits the only current solution to this problem is to completely uninstall Norton 2009 Antivirus/Internet Security products. There is no other workaround.

Worse yet, the responsiveness of the company to major software bugs has been less than acceptable. It literally takes months for even the most urgent bugs to get identified, corrected, and then put through a laborious test procedure. To add insult to injury, it then takes up to six additional weeks for the fixed code to be incorporated into their slow update release schedule and finally reach every customer.

This truly mars an otherwise promising product and makes it an unacceptable option for those dependent on networked machines, such as a home or small business network. If you are dependent on your network to access remote hard drives or collaborate in an office environment, Norton 2009 products are absolutely not acceptable for use and I strongly recommend you look elsewhere until the company finally fixes the problem.

A very lengthy discussion about this problem can be found on the Norton Community Forum. Simply search for “NAV blocks access to hard disk.” The later discussions in the thread contain the most pertinent information.

1 Star No Thanks!
I ran Norton Anti Vi for almost 6 months before I discovered it was responsible for my system crashing daily. When I called their support I was sent useless procedures to follow and none of them resolved the problem. The only thing that worked was to remove it and install a different Anti-Vi from another company. I am running Bit-Defender and Kapersky on 2 separate PCs. A small problem with Bit-Defender was resolved quickly by their tremendous Customer Support. No problems with Kapersky so far after a year.

1 Star Symantec Will Not Honor the 3 Licenses- Only One
I installed one of the 3 licenses for NAV 2008 on one computer, but when I went to install it on a second, the keycode was rejected, and, after spending an hour chatting with a barely literate third world tech support guy named “Vivek”, he refused to admit that you can actually purchase 3 user licenses from a vendor. He was only aware of single and 5 user licenses, and he based his position entirely on this. So, if you pay for 3, you may only get one license. Buyer beware. This is an awful company to deal with, with even worse support. Stay away.

1 Star Worst decision I could have made
I had the 2005 Norton antivirus on my computer. This week, a notification popped up telling me I could upgrade to 2008 for free. I said “sure”. During the installation process, the old version is uninstalled and then the new version installs. The program froze while installing and my computer had to shut down. When it came back, everything appeared to be OK. Then I noticed that my virus protection kept turning off and I had no way to turn it back on. I didn’t even have a fix now button. I tried going online to get customer service, but I use firefox and they want you to have internet explorer to chat. Sorry, not doing that. I tried to email them, but instead it would change the screen and say I need to talk to someone on chat. I couldn’t email anyone a simple question! I looked for a phone number and noticed that now you have to pay $10 just to talk to someone in India. Uh, sorry, no! I never paid in the past. I went all over trying to figure out what the hell was wrong and finally decided to uninstall and reinstall. Also a big mistake.

Upon reinstalling, everything looks like it’s going well, but it isn’t. The program wants a file from my computer that is missing and the path to get there is listed in a separate window, but when I click “OK” it shows another window transferring the file, but it’s frozen. Nothing I do works and I can’t find the file on my computer when I search for it myself. So now, I renewed my subscription about 2 months ago so that I could waste the money I don’t have because I don’t currently have a job. AND I lost the antivirus protection that I had that worked fine. You cannot get tech support for this software anymore- you get forced into going around in circles. If they are going to give you a free upgrade, they should at least not screw you over with it and then make it impossible to contact them about it. I downloaded free AVG and my computer is faster and protected. I suggest you do the same.

5 Stars virus software
This is the 1st time I have ever used this product. I bought it because of the reviews in consumer report. It is working well for me I have had it in my computer for 1 month now.

4 Stars Minor problems with AV 2009; Uneven support experiences
I used BitDefender (BD) to replace Norton Antivirus (NAV) because NAV was consuming too much resource and NAV support wasn’t very responsive. I started out with BitDefender Antivirus 2008 on 2 computers: One was running Windows 2000 and the second Vista Ultimate. I bought the 2 year license for 3 computers.

Initial installation on both computers went smoothly. I was happy to find that BD did indeed use less of both computers’ memory and CPU. It’s easy to scan a file on demand because BD added a menu item to the menu that comes up when you right click on a file. Just right click and select “Scan with BitDefender”.

After a few months use, the BD installation on the Vista computer quit working. BD support’s solution was, as is mentioned in several of the other reviews, “uninstall and re-install” so that’s what I did and it fixed the problem.

BD 2009 came out several months after I initially installed BD 2008. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that I could upgrade the Vista machine AT NO ADDITIONAL COST! (BD 2009 wasn’t supported on Win 2k so I couldn’t upgrade that machine.)

However, after upgrading, none of the stock trading software I use was able to access real time stock quotes. I started a chat with BD support and they quickly helped me uncheck a couple of default options to fix the problem.

After fixing the real time stock quote problem, the software ran for about 4 months without incident. Then I started using Microsoft Media Player (MMP) to listen to the BBC. Apparently, MMP uses a cookie to keep track of the stations. When the BD system scan ran, it considered these cookies to be dangerous and deleted them. This forces me to re-add the BBC so I tried to add the cookie files to the BD “Exclusion” list. But I wasn’t able to do so because nothing happened when I clicked the “Add” button on the BD Exclusion Wizard after typing in the full path to the cookie files. I reported this problem to BD support and they fixed the problem shortly thereafter. However, after about 2 weeks, a new maintenance release of BD came out and the fix disappeared. Once again, the cookie files are being deleted and I can’t update the exclusion list.

I looked on the BD web site forums and it’s easy to find lots of people with serious problems (I’ve had none) who are not getting any response from BD tech support. This leaves me with the feeling that, as long as the product continues to run, I’ll be ok but if I ever encounter a serious problem I’ll be out of luck. If that happens, I guess I’ll try another AV product.

2 Stars Too many glitches for established product
I purchased Bitdefender AV 2009 for 2yr/3 PC thinking I was doing a good thing. I’m glad my husband’s laptop still has Norton or I wouldn’t be writing this. A few of the problems are as follows: Delayed keystrokes while typing email, incorrect phishing alerts while visiting websites, extremely long deep scans (think 6-8 hours), delayed access to the internet, constant requests to reboot because product is not working, etc. If I could get my money back, I would. After all the great reviews (from my peers here at Amazon as well as CNET), I thought I was making a great choice. I’m wrong. The reason for two stars and not one? The support staff does respond, most of the time. They are responsive, just not always helpful.

3 Stars OK But Really Stupid Software
I have had Bit Defender Anti-Virus for three years. When I upgraded to version 10, the real time shield wouldn’t always load so I would be on the Internet unprotected until I realized the icon wasn’t in the system tray. Bit Defender support didn’t have a fix for that. Earlier this year, I got a really annoying malware that Bit Defender not only did not detect but couldn’t clear up. It slowed down my computer and kept making an irritating ticking noise. After two days of silence from the BD support team, I found a free anti-malware program on the Web that cleared it up in five minutes. I renewed it again for 2009 because I was too busy to evaluate other virus programs and felt I needed something. Other than the two previous mentioned problems, the software seemed to work ok. So now I downloaded the 2009 version and went to install it. Normally any upgrade will tell you that an older version was detected and it should be uninstalled or the upgrade offers to remove it. Nothing. I executed the install and without any messages it deleted three quarters of the old install but did not install the new version. But it gave me a message saying to restart to complete installation and when I booted up-no antivirus! I had to manually delete the old directory and re-initiate the installation.

I have a low threshold for poorly written software and this one is really really stupid! The BD support is lacking and good luck calling in. Next year I won’t be so lazy; I’ll do my homework and find a professional AV software.

1 Star Customer support is the pits - product won’t run
I’ve been a BitDefender customer for several years. I recently bought and installed this product and it ran fine on two of my PCs. On the other PC, antivirus scans hang up (forever) on a certain directory. Searches with Google indicate many others have this problem. BitDefender customer support insisted the problem was due to two other programs I have on the PC. I removed them per their request and still have the problem. They never responded to me after that. If you’re one who doesn’t have a problem, you’ll like the software. If you have a problem, it’s a throw-away. I’ve since installed a competitive product on the system and it has no problems with scans. There were other minor Bitdefender drawbacks that I learned to live with, but this one was a showstopper.

1 Star Symantec tech support could not get the program to operate
After three hours Symantec promised a senior tech would call back.

After numerous e-mails to them I gave up.

Shame on you Symantec/Norton!!!!

5 Stars A Really Good Product for the Money
I’ve been using Norton Systemworks for some time now and have been very satisfied with the results. It does a very good job of cleaning up your HDD, registry, etc. along with scanning for viruses and spyware. For those that don’t have a FAST internet connection- BEWARE. As soon as it installs, it will go to the Norton website to look for updates. If you have a dial up connection, you will be there for a WHILE!! Unless you need it, I would suggest you turn off some of the automatic features as it will slow down your computer. If you are smart about what you download and are careful NOT to open suspicious e-mails and stick to well known websites, you can manually scan most things and be just fine. GOOD LUCK and ENJOY this helpful product.

1 Star bug ridden mess that does more harm than good
I’ve been using Norton Utilities for many many years. Starting back in the early macintosh days, and now right up to windows vista. What’s really sad is to see their product get worse and worse each year. But I think this one is the last straw.

First I had problems with my rebate (for owning a prior version). Then I had problems with licensing. Although I went through the licensing procedure and registered my product, the backup utility that is part of this got installed as a “trial” and kept nagging me until it timed out. The product also crashes frequently, and after finally getting my license squared away, then the backup utility refused to work. I eventually learned that it had corrupted its internal database, making it useless.

Honestly, even though it is inexpensive for prior version users to upgrade to this version (assuming they honor their rebate), I still regret doing it. I would definitely recommend macafee for security and virus removal, and pretty much anything else for backups. It’s really sad to see what Symmantec did to this once great product.

5 Stars SYSTEM WORKS 2008 JUST RIGHT FOR ME
I HAVE BEEN A FAN OF NORTON SYSTEM WORKS SINCE I HAVE OWNED A COMPUTER. THIS LATEST VERSION THE PREMIER EDITION 11.0 HAS ALL I NEED AND MORE. INSTALL EASY, SETUP EASY, UPDATES, IN SIMPLE TERMS IT WORKS GREAT. I WOULD RECOMMEND.

1 Star norton
WARNING to anyone thinking about buying this product! Please understand that you will not be buying this product only RENTING it. If you do not renew every year the product stops working….COMPLETELY! I’m not just talking about updates, etc. It actually tells you that it has stopped working and it won’t work unless you renew. I have just wasted more than 2 hours with Norton’s online tech support. This is the case with ALL Norton products and I am quoting the tech.
