3 Stars Much Improved for 2009, But At Least One Fatal Flaw Rears Its Head
After years of running Norton Antivirus products, with ever increasing demands on system resources, as well as slowing down the machines these products were installed on, the completely rewritten version of Norton Internet Security 2009 has gone a very long way towards correcting years of bloatware code that was made worse with every new release.

This version installs fast, runs fast, and is almost entirely unobtrusive, with one very major exception.

This software will break your home or small business network.

In a well-documented bug first discovered in October 2008, Norton interferes with, and eventually blocks access to other machines on your home network. Norton admits there is a problem, and has been stalling customers for months with promises for a fix, yet keeps pushing the release date out further and further.

Install Norton 2009, and eventually all of the computers on your home network under My Network Places will disappear, and will eventually be blocked from access. While you can frequently manually reach your other networked machines by typing their addresses directly into an address bar, software that depends on access to your other networked machines directly (index, backup, small business collaboration tools, etc.) usually cannot work this way, and you are effectively cut off from using those applications. Worse, over time, Norton will begin periodically cutting off access to your networked machines. Suddenly file copying between machines fails, extremely long delays in accessing other computers on your network occurs, and your frustration level mounts.

Norton admits the only current solution to this problem is to completely uninstall Norton 2009 Antivirus/Internet Security products. There is no other workaround.

Worse yet, the responsiveness of the company to major software bugs has been less than acceptable. It literally takes months for even the most urgent bugs to get identified, corrected, and then put through a laborious test procedure. To add insult to injury, it then takes up to six additional weeks for the fixed code to be incorporated into their slow update release schedule and finally reach every customer.

This truly mars an otherwise promising product and makes it an unacceptable option for those dependent on networked machines, such as a home or small business network. If you are dependent on your network to access remote hard drives or collaborate in an office environment, Norton 2009 products are absolutely not acceptable for use and I strongly recommend you look elsewhere until the company finally fixes the problem.

A very lengthy discussion about this problem can be found on the Norton Community Forum. Simply search for “NAV blocks access to hard disk.” The later discussions in the thread contain the most pertinent information.

Mine main system was working fine until Norton AV 2009 (I have not used Norton software since the 90’s.) I thought I’ll try it again for the first time. Probs. after probs., I am going to reinstall my system again MINUS Norton AV 2009 and reinstall AVV and we will see if it’s the software or the hard drive… BUT I’m thinking it Norton AV 2009 is the prob. I have another partition with Ubuntu/Linux .. Yes I know why are you using Windows XP pro? Because of 90% of all software is written for Windows. Excellent Product. Have purchased this product in the past and will continue to purchase it.

5 Stars Good Stuff
I’ve always used Norton and once again the 2009 version doesn’t disappoint. I got it at a really reasonable price, much cheaper than Walmart, Best Buy and even Symantec’s own website. My wife and I surf on alot of different websites and using Windows these days its so easy to get a virus or malware/spyware on your pc. I am happy to report that I have been using Norton since 2003 and have not had one bad incident. I highly recommend.

5 Stars Dumped ZoneAlarm, SpywareDr and Avast! for NIS 2009
I’ll keep my comments brief as most of the other reviewers covered everything I could say.

One, install time exceptionally fast!!!

Two, only one reboot.

Three, simple elegant interface.

Four, waits until computer is idle and them works its magic, but even then resource usage remains low.

Five, the complete recoding of NIS 2009 and dumping their previous NIS suites into the trash has this security suite running faster than any I have ever seen, and I have tried many, many different ones.

Just for having the guts to dump the old resource hog of their previous security suite, I bought NIS 2009. BTW, the old NIS versions WERE resource hogs. I started out using Norton years ago, and still have Norton Partition Magic which I bought 5-6 years ago and I’m pleased to see that they still sell it on their site, but I dumped Norton when it went hog . . . really disgusted. The code in NIS 2009 rocks.

And to make it all work even better the Internet Security Suite reviews I read gave NIS 2009 high marks.

My wife’s laptop upgraded from a previous version of NIS to NIS 2009 and I saw it in action on her computer with is NOT packed with high cpu cycles although it has 2Gb of mem.

Buy this one and you will not be sorry.

BTW, don’t even consider Norton 360. It sucks big time.

4 Stars NIS 2009 install tip
If you are replacing a prior version of NIS Norton Internet Security 2009 1User/3Pc, save yourself some aggravation and run the Symantec uninstall tool from Symantec’s web page before you try to install NIS 2009. It completely removes all Symantec products. You don’t get a clean uninstall if you just do it from the control panel and the new version won’t install correctly.

4 Stars Norton gives me a feeling of security
I had Norton Internet security 2008. One day last month I went to download my daily virus signatures and a dialog box from Norton came up and asked me if I wanted to download Norton Internet Security 2009 FOR FREE. Of course I clicked on “yes”. N.I.S. 2009 is great. I like the new interface better, it only takes about 30 seconds to download new virus signatures and other updates. A quick scan takes mabee a minute. A full scan of my roughly 110 gigabytes takes under half an hour. After I download my daily updates I have the option to see what files and modules were updated. On the main menu there is a counter telling me how many days I have until I need to resubscribe. I haven’t realy explored the rest of the program, but these three things are all I really need to do to keep my system “clean”. I wish other software companys would make software as helpful as N.I.S. 2009, and would be as generous as Symantec.

5 Stars Great service and product
The transaction was faultless. The product exceeded my expectations. I will order again from this source.

4 Stars Norton’s Internet Security
According to Symantec this product is only for Window users.

There is a Macintosh version called Norton’s Internet Security Dual Protection for the Mac.

From searching the Web the product so far is only available from Symantec.

There is an older product but it will not work with later OS 10 Systems including Tiger & Leopard.

1 Star CorelX4
I have made several attempts to contact Corel and they simply have refused to follow up on my requests for assistance. I bought the product new on Amazon and the serial key will not work. I sent the sales receipt, pic of the serial key, etc. and they still have not responded back.

5 Stars CorelDraw Graphics Suite x4 Education Edition
CorelDraw has moved forward with new tools and effects that are efficient and necessary for designing images for many needs. By offering educational pricing, this product is readily affordable.

5 Stars CorelDRAW for Vista
I got a new computer running Vista and needed to replace all my software. I had an older version of CorelDRAW and many features would not load properly on Vista. The new graphics suite works fine and Amazon got me the software adhead of their promised date. All is well, again.

5 Stars A Great Program
I have been using CorelDraw7 for many years - mostly self taught. Received a new computer for Christmas and updated to CorelDraw X4. The new features are very easy to get used to and the Users Guide on the DVD is a great asset. However, being considerably older than most users I would have preferred a printed manual. I did buy a copy of “CorelDraw X4 - The Official Guide” by Gary Bouton to supplement the DVD version and find I am using it almost exclusively. It’s a great book.

My hobby is woodworking so this is an ideal program for design and assembly drawings. I realise I’m not nearly utilizing the full capabilities of this program but I am completely satisfied and would highly reccommend it to anyone. I also own a copy of another highly rated draw program but prefer CoreDraw X4 hands down.

5 Stars corel draw
I am looking forward to learning how to do all the program has to offer.

4 Stars Works As Intended
I bought Windows Vista to use on my Intel based iMac, and it runs just as I expected it to. It is by no means a good operating system, but for those of you that need to switch over to Windows for a couple programs, this certainly will do the trick. The install was painless via Bootcamp, and the package comes with everything you need to be up and running in no time.

5 Stars Installed successfully on Macbook (10.5.4)
I have 120 GB Macbook. Got this 32-bit Windows Home Premium DVD and successfully installed it on a 35 GB partition created by Boot Camp. Out of 35 GB, Windows OS took 10.5 GB of disk space. Satisfied!

4 Stars Satisfied.
The OS installed flawlessly on my MacBook Air. No issues. Of note; the OS is delivered on DVD-ROM and not CD-ROM. I would ask Amazon to change their web-site info.

5 Stars Vista Home Premium with SP1 32-bit for System Builders - Review
Installed with little problem on HP laptop to replace the OEM 64-bit Vista OS that was incompatible with some of my most important apps (sucks).

It involved a bit more work updating the drivers and supporting bits, but it saved considerable money over buying the full version off the shelf.

3 Stars Window Vista Home Premium
This product is alright, I give it a 7 out of 10. Takes awhile to get use to. Some of the new flashy bells and whistle are unnecessary and takes up a chunk of memory. I use both Mac(graphic design) and PC(gaming). I can see how Vista is trying to integrate similar features of Mac OSX by trying to go all out on the visuals which is kind of cool and lame at the same time, if anything, Vista should have gone the simpler route. I love using XP because of its simplicity, I guess Vista is something that is forced upon us to get use to and maybe one day I’ll start liking it. I’m one of those guys that doesn’t like to be forced change when something isn’t broken and what makes me more skeptical is Windows 7 is coming out just around the corner(2009-2010). So what’s going to happen to Vista then? What gives Microsoft?

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit English 1pk

1PK VISTA HOME PREM 64BIT DVD

User Ratings and Reviews

1 Star Amazingly slow
I have been using Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit version patiently for several months now. The “performance indicator” says my Windows Vista experience is a 5.6 out of a possible 5.9 — this is supposed to be some indication of how fast my hardware is. So, my hardware is top notch — brand new HP quad core Phenom 2.4 GHz processor with 8GB of RAM. As a matter of fact, all my hardware gets a 5.9/5.9 except my video card. But, as soon as I boot, I notice the OS is using 1.5GB of RAM, before I touch anything. If I leave Internet Explorer open, it has a memory leak that gets progressively worse and completely overtakes the system within a few hours. I tried to play a movie, and it struggled to decode it fast enough — playback suffered immensely.

My patience has run out. I’m reverting back to Windows XP, or at least installing a dual boot configuration, because this machine is just silly slow. I have brand new, top-of-the-line 64-bit hardware and a crazy amount of RAM; and this machine feels slow. I’m amazed at how inferior of a product this is.

2 Stars vista?
I got Vista which was supposed to be compatible. If you are using Visual Studio, creating ASP.Net applications and connecting to Oracle databases you are out-of-luck. No solutions to that one.

2 Stars Got a Palm? It won’t sync
I just got off the phone with Palm — they have absolutely no products that will be compatible with this Microsoft 64 bit technology. No patches at all, either. So if you have a Palm — watch out — it will NOT work with this. Palm says Microsoft issue. You will not be able to use any Palm software at all. That means if you have a palm PDA, it will forever be stuck in the PDA and not go onto your computer at all, if you get this software.

2 Stars “Such-and-Such Program Has Stopped Working”
…and that’s all she wrote, folks.

Vista is the worst investment I ever made. I would gladly switch back to Windows XP at any time, but then my 8GB of Ram won’t be detected and the computer definitely wouldn’t run to it’s full capacity. Perhaps that’s the only appeal of Vista at this point…being able to run so much Ram that no one is actually going to need for another 4 years (and yes I’m guilty of it too). I have had nothing but problems with this OS since the day it was installed.

If you’re looking to purchase the 64-bit Windows Vista package, make sure that you don’t need your computer for anything important. I can get nothing to work on this computer at all. Everything you have probably heard about Vista’s compatibility issues is true…virtually everything I’ve tried to use so far has not worked. This includes important peripherals and necessary programs. With my previous computer dying of old age and the tremendous deal on OEM parts on NewEgg, I figured Vista was definitely the way to go. I am so badly regretting that decision now. We use my wife’s 5 year old Dell laptop as the primary computer now since my Vista desktop is basically only good for gaming and nothing else.

Here’s a list of all the things that are thus far incompatible with Vista. This is all from first-hand experience:

- Dell Printers

- Limewire

- Olympus Digital Cameras

- Canon Digital Camera

- Various types of USB optical mouse

- Dell Jukebox MP3 Players

- I-Pods

- I-Tunes

- Digital Camcorders

- Roughly 80% of games created pre-2006 (that I’ve tried)

- Various Dell Scanners

- Various HP Printers and Scanners

- Various USB-related devices

- Various speaker systems

- And more every day

I had Vista professionally installed…I don’t know what I’m doing when it comes to installations like that so I wanted to have it done by someone who knows what they are doing. When I gave the person the parts and Vista, I thought he was joking when he said “I’ll see you again in about a month when you want to downgrade back to XP.” If I had only known then what I know now. In one month of owning Vista i’ve had nothing but frustration and anger. The only thing it does well is run World of Warcraft, and my wife is thrilled at the amount of space we have for her Real Arcade games.

I probably sound like I’m just whining…well, I’m one of the many who have had nothing but problems with Vista. As badly as my old computer was running before it just died, it still was compatible with everything I owned. Since I “upgraded” to Vista 64 with my new computer, I haven’t been able to print, scan, load pictures onto my computer, or do anything else that any home office NEEDS.

Don’t be an idiot like me and get Vista because you want 8 gigs of ram, which you DO NOT NEED for any logical reason. XP 64 works just as good, and you won’t have to deal with Vista’s rampant issues. Just think of Vista as the Next “Windows 2000″. Since the new Windows is launching in 2009, Vista is just another Microsoft stumbling block that’s costing us too much money and wasted time. I’m glad I bought this trash product OEM and didn’t pay full price. This is the worst OS I have ever used. Go with XP and stay away from Vista at all costs.

5 Stars Good but…
I would recommend this to any gamer BUT, it has problems running some older games. Also, the other big draw back I wish I would of known about, is you can not really play Game Tap anymore except for the 8-bit games…BIG turn off to me :(

1 Star vista 32bit vs mac osx
yes i agree that this is the cheapest way to get vista…vista has problems to the point where people are going back to xp,save yourself the hastle and buy a mac,mac os x is extremely stable and never crashes.Apple MacBook Pro MB134LL/A 15.4-inch Laptop (2.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, 2 GB RAM, 250 GB Hard Drive, DVD/CD SuperDrive) for the macbook pro and Apple MacBook MB466LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop (2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, 2 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, Slot Loading SuperDrive) for cheap macbook

3 Stars cheapest way to get vista
This is the cheapest way to get vista that I know of. However, of course it has all the faults that microsoft is famous for. Buy a mac and make your life easier.

Not sure if the developers version installs easily on a barebones pc, but it installed without trouble on a second partition on a macbook. In that situation at least it is not worth buying the non-developers version

I give it five out of five for price, and 1 out of five because its vista, making three out of five overall.

User Ratings and Reviews

1 Star Avoid like the plague. No wait, this is worse.
This OS does not work with 99% of all hardware devices due to its mandatory driver signing policy. This means that a hardware device and/or driver that does not implement DRM cannot be certified and therefore used with this OS. If you can, get the 32-bit version instead. Or better yet, get XP.

4 Stars Not for Boot Camp Macs with OS 10.4
This rating is for the package, not the OS itself.

Just a warning…this will NOT WORK CORRECTLY if you plan to install using Boot Camp on your 64 bit Mac. It will install, but as of OS 10.4, many of the drivers are only supported by the 32 bit version of Windows Vista (so get that!). Parallels can not handle 64 bit either. Just a warning.

3 Stars Vista 64
New rating: 4/5

Just a quick note before I begin: I run 2x 1GB GeForce 8600 GT on an MSI n570 SLi motherboard with an AMD Phenom @ 2.6 Ghz with 8GB DDR2 RAM. I am not a hardcore gamer or PC enthusiast; this is the first rig of this calibur that I have ever built.

That being said….

Ah Vista. How anxious I was to try you out myself. I’ve heard lots of different things about you, some good, and lots of bad. I’ll reflect on my initial experience with this OS in this review.

Installation was a breeze. Vista rarely prompted me unnecessarily (for example, it just restarted instead of prompting me and waiting for 30 seconds), and the whole process couldn’t have been longer than ten minutes. And for those of you updating your system from XP (or some other Microsoft OS), Vista has an “update” feature and a clean install feature; the former saves all of your personal information while the latter is pretty self explanatory.

My initial reaction went something like this: wow, this looks pretty slick. And it continues to look pretty slick. Microsoft piles on the visual goods with window shadowing, transparencies, and tight color schemes. All of these effects work right out of the box, so if you’re a sucker for visuals this won’t disappoint you. On the other hand, if you reminisce about the days of 3.1, you can always turn these features off. I would recommend this for users that experience lower performance than they desire.

Vista is also loaded with control features. I ended up removing many of them in favor of less hassle and better performance, but for those of you that like prompts and many security features, Vista will again support your desires. Vista’s initial settings will prompt you whenever ANY program tries to access the web and whenever ANY program (that isn’t started by the OS) runs. I felt that this was a little much and disabled both. It comes with a firewall, Windows defender, performance monitors, a new look for the control panel, a new sidebar, and an improved search engine (which I’ve heard plenty of complaining about, but it works great for me… its on the start menu people, its not hard to find!).

There are some down sides. If you’re looking to disable security features that Vista insists on running as defaults, you’re going to find it pretty difficult. As in, look around for a half hour, give up, get a coffee, come back with friends and look for another half hour before you find it difficult. Also, it could boot a little faster. I was expecting blazing booting speed with the rig that I built but honestly my family’s computer with XP gets up and running quicker, and it runs on spare blender parts. Additionally, when you see “32-bit compatibility” advertised, they mean that you can run a program that allows a single program to run in an XP environment, and choose whether or not to run it in this format permanently or not. Forget about playing older games or running old software as well; 64-bit Vista does not support 16-bit code.

All-in-all, the goods far outway the bad. It runs smooth, looks great, and allows great flexibility while providing excellent security and features designed to aid any kind of user. I would recommend this to anyone that plans on running a lot of 64-bit software, or to PC builders that plan on using more than 3GB of RAM (32-bit OSs don’t support any more than that!). Other than that though, I would say just stick with 32-bit Vista as you will run into less compatibility issues in the near future.

3 Stars I wish I got 32 bit Vista instead.
It is a good operating system, and updates have fixed more then a few problems, but before buying this I did not realize that quite a number of programs did not support 64 bit windows. I wanted to use the zonealarm firewall and spyware doctor, but they’re not supported on this. I thought 64 bit would be better than 32 bit (which it is in some ways) but not enough software is supported on it. So I would suggest that you stick with 32 bit vista (or XP) for now.

P.S I did not have any problems with PC games working on it, they worked just fine, even Oblivion did.
