1 Star It’s 10:30 pm, and why am I sitting at my computer.
I have used McAffee for a couple of years, but this one is real junk. Since the last update, the console that allows me to stop a scan no longer appears. It scans whenever it feels like it. The infected files list in the log has a length of about 10 characters ( nothing like you have an infection in C:/Program_f. ) It gives false positives.
So, why am I sitting at my computer. Well McAffee decided to scan even though it was scheduled to run at 7am. I can’t stop it, and it will not let windows shut down. So, I suppose I do what I now have to do to shut down my computer - pull the plug.
4 Stars This was a great deal
This was a great price for this product. Installed with not problems. Love the parental controls.
1 Star I HATE THIS PROGRAM
I HATE THIS PROGRAM. Everyday there is something it does to waste my time. The most annoying ritual is I have to activate it several times a day. When I missed doing so, I had to re-install the program (downloading and installation - about 90 minutes). Several times a month the automatic update causes errors, at the least I have to stop everything and re-boot several time, or more often than not, the program informs me I have to re-install … again. It doesn’t work in the background either, whenever it decides to do something, (scan, download, update the program). Everything I’m doing crawls to a halt. No warning either, if I am doing something that needs the processor or the internet… too bad. (The only thing you can stop is the scan, if you look for the hidden icon, but by then it is too late.) If you try to change the settings (if you can find them) it announces you are unprotected all the time. Finally, they send you a butt load of ads that pop up on your desktop and you have to click the button “continue with what I am doing”
2 Stars OK (If you can get it to install properly)
For many years I used Norton, but the last version I used slowed my computer down, so I switched to McAfee a couple of years ago and was pretty happy with it. When my subscription expired, I purchased IS 2009. It works OK and I like the Site Advisor feature, but installing it was a nightmare. On my first attempt, the install hung up, so I manually uninstalled my old version and tried again. I couldn’t get Site Advisor to work and it kept prompting me to activate my product. So I tried to uninstall/install with no success. Finally, after rooting around through the support site, which I didn’t find all that good, I downloaded a separate product (MCPR.EXE)from McAfee which uninstalls old versions (even though the new version is supposed to uninstall the old one). After running that, I finally got the new version to install properly.
If I were switching to a different program, I might expect some glitches, but upgrading to a new version from the same company should NOT be this painful. This is probably my last version of McAfee.
4 Stars McAffee Upgrade
Easy to install from the disc as long as the original version was uninstalled; updates are automatic. Can’t recommend the online download option…
