3 Stars Much Improved for 2009, But At Least One Fatal Flaw Rears Its Head
After years of running Norton Antivirus products, with ever increasing demands on system resources, as well as slowing down the machines these products were installed on, the completely rewritten version of Norton Internet Security 2009 has gone a very long way towards correcting years of bloatware code that was made worse with every new release.

This version installs fast, runs fast, and is almost entirely unobtrusive, with one very major exception.

This software will break your home or small business network.

In a well-documented bug first discovered in October 2008, Norton interferes with, and eventually blocks access to other machines on your home network. Norton admits there is a problem, and has been stalling customers for months with promises for a fix, yet keeps pushing the release date out further and further.

Install Norton 2009, and eventually all of the computers on your home network under My Network Places will disappear, and will eventually be blocked from access. While you can frequently manually reach your other networked machines by typing their addresses directly into an address bar, software that depends on access to your other networked machines directly (index, backup, small business collaboration tools, etc.) usually cannot work this way, and you are effectively cut off from using those applications. Worse, over time, Norton will begin periodically cutting off access to your networked machines. Suddenly file copying between machines fails, extremely long delays in accessing other computers on your network occurs, and your frustration level mounts.

Norton admits the only current solution to this problem is to completely uninstall Norton 2009 Antivirus/Internet Security products. There is no other workaround.

Worse yet, the responsiveness of the company to major software bugs has been less than acceptable. It literally takes months for even the most urgent bugs to get identified, corrected, and then put through a laborious test procedure. To add insult to injury, it then takes up to six additional weeks for the fixed code to be incorporated into their slow update release schedule and finally reach every customer.

This truly mars an otherwise promising product and makes it an unacceptable option for those dependent on networked machines, such as a home or small business network. If you are dependent on your network to access remote hard drives or collaborate in an office environment, Norton 2009 products are absolutely not acceptable for use and I strongly recommend you look elsewhere until the company finally fixes the problem.

A very lengthy discussion about this problem can be found on the Norton Community Forum. Simply search for “NAV blocks access to hard disk.” The later discussions in the thread contain the most pertinent information.

Yes it did install - OK. That’s the only reason it got 2 stars not one.

Mine main system was working fine until Norton AV 2009 (I have not used Norton software since the 90’s.) I thought I’ll try it again for the first time. Probs. after probs., I am going to reinstall my system again MINUS Norton AV 2009 and reinstall AVV and we will see if it’s the software or the hard drive… BUT I’m thinking it Norton AV 2009 is the prob. I have another partition with Ubuntu/Linux .. Yes I know why are you using Windows XP pro? Because of 90% of all software is written for Windows. My wife and I surf on alot of different websites and using Windows these days its so easy to get a virus or malware/spyware on your pc. I am happy to report that I have been using Norton since 2003 and have not had one bad incident. I highly recommend.

1 Star No Thanks!
I ran Norton Anti Vi for almost 6 months before I discovered it was responsible for my system crashing daily. When I called their support I was sent useless procedures to follow and none of them resolved the problem. The only thing that worked was to remove it and install a different Anti-Vi from another company. I am running Bit-Defender and Kapersky on 2 separate PCs. A small problem with Bit-Defender was resolved quickly by their tremendous Customer Support. No problems with Kapersky so far after a year.

1 Star Symantec Will Not Honor the 3 Licenses- Only One
I installed one of the 3 licenses for NAV 2008 on one computer, but when I went to install it on a second, the keycode was rejected, and, after spending an hour chatting with a barely literate third world tech support guy named “Vivek”, he refused to admit that you can actually purchase 3 user licenses from a vendor. He was only aware of single and 5 user licenses, and he based his position entirely on this. So, if you pay for 3, you may only get one license. Buyer beware. This is an awful company to deal with, with even worse support. Stay away.

1 Star Worst decision I could have made
I had the 2005 Norton antivirus on my computer. This week, a notification popped up telling me I could upgrade to 2008 for free. I said “sure”. During the installation process, the old version is uninstalled and then the new version installs. The program froze while installing and my computer had to shut down. When it came back, everything appeared to be OK. Then I noticed that my virus protection kept turning off and I had no way to turn it back on. I didn’t even have a fix now button. I tried going online to get customer service, but I use firefox and they want you to have internet explorer to chat. Sorry, not doing that. I tried to email them, but instead it would change the screen and say I need to talk to someone on chat. I couldn’t email anyone a simple question! I looked for a phone number and noticed that now you have to pay $10 just to talk to someone in India. Uh, sorry, no! I never paid in the past. I went all over trying to figure out what the hell was wrong and finally decided to uninstall and reinstall. Also a big mistake.

Upon reinstalling, everything looks like it’s going well, but it isn’t. The program wants a file from my computer that is missing and the path to get there is listed in a separate window, but when I click “OK” it shows another window transferring the file, but it’s frozen. Nothing I do works and I can’t find the file on my computer when I search for it myself. So now, I renewed my subscription about 2 months ago so that I could waste the money I don’t have because I don’t currently have a job. AND I lost the antivirus protection that I had that worked fine. You cannot get tech support for this software anymore- you get forced into going around in circles. If they are going to give you a free upgrade, they should at least not screw you over with it and then make it impossible to contact them about it. I downloaded free AVG and my computer is faster and protected. I suggest you do the same.

5 Stars norton
this product is better than i expected it to be and love it and the company that makes it thank you very much

5 Stars Thanks gor a great Amazon transaction! A++++++

5 Stars Dumped ZoneAlarm, SpywareDr and Avast! for NIS 2009
I’ll keep my comments brief as most of the other reviewers covered everything I could say.

One, install time exceptionally fast!!!

Two, only one reboot.

Three, simple elegant interface.

Four, waits until computer is idle and them works its magic, but even then resource usage remains low.

Five, the complete recoding of NIS 2009 and dumping their previous NIS suites into the trash has this security suite running faster than any I have ever seen, and I have tried many, many different ones.

Just for having the guts to dump the old resource hog of their previous security suite, I bought NIS 2009. BTW, the old NIS versions WERE resource hogs. I started out using Norton years ago, and still have Norton Partition Magic which I bought 5-6 years ago and I’m pleased to see that they still sell it on their site, but I dumped Norton when it went hog . . . really disgusted. The code in NIS 2009 rocks.

And to make it all work even better the Internet Security Suite reviews I read gave NIS 2009 high marks.

My wife’s laptop upgraded from a previous version of NIS to NIS 2009 and I saw it in action on her computer with is NOT packed with high cpu cycles although it has 2Gb of mem.

Buy this one and you will not be sorry.

BTW, don’t even consider Norton 360. It sucks big time.

4 Stars NIS 2009 install tip
If you are replacing a prior version of NIS Norton Internet Security 2009 1User/3Pc, save yourself some aggravation and run the Symantec uninstall tool from Symantec’s web page before you try to install NIS 2009. It completely removes all Symantec products. You don’t get a clean uninstall if you just do it from the control panel and the new version won’t install correctly.

4 Stars Norton gives me a feeling of security
I had Norton Internet security 2008. One day last month I went to download my daily virus signatures and a dialog box from Norton came up and asked me if I wanted to download Norton Internet Security 2009 FOR FREE. Of course I clicked on “yes”. N.I.S. 2009 is great. I like the new interface better, it only takes about 30 seconds to download new virus signatures and other updates. A quick scan takes mabee a minute. A full scan of my roughly 110 gigabytes takes under half an hour. After I download my daily updates I have the option to see what files and modules were updated. On the main menu there is a counter telling me how many days I have until I need to resubscribe. I haven’t realy explored the rest of the program, but these three things are all I really need to do to keep my system “clean”. I wish other software companys would make software as helpful as N.I.S. 2009, and would be as generous as Symantec.

5 Stars Great service and product
The transaction was faultless. The product exceeded my expectations. I will order again from this source.

4 Stars Norton’s Internet Security
According to Symantec this product is only for Window users.

There is a Macintosh version called Norton’s Internet Security Dual Protection for the Mac.

From searching the Web the product so far is only available from Symantec.

There is an older product but it will not work with later OS 10 Systems including Tiger & Leopard.
