5 Stars Great for Landscaping Layouts
My background is in Architecture and I have been using similar products for over 12 years. I have am not a representative of either HGTV or Nova Development but I did extensive work, based on my background, on the images used for the advertising of HGTV Home Design series.

I can say that there is no product at this price range that is as user friendly. It is both extremely easy to use and extremely flexable. But do not think that it cannot do more advanced and complicated projects. The great aspect of HGTV Home Design series is that it is realtively new compared to others on the market. This then allows for the latest innovations to be built into the code base.

Commands as simple as using a Paint Brush to apply textures to walls and the ability to select/ right click and ‘REPLACE’ an object with a new one without deleting the old, are examples of how new innovations are being implimented. Curving a wall and having the roof automatically adjust to that new wall configuration are not available in some older code based programs.

The terrain tools and related ‘plants’ are easy to use and designed to make fast work of rendering with Real View. There are some ‘tricks’ that are useful when adjusting terrians but they are not hard to impliment. Because all the plants are image based, you don’t have the long wait associated with ‘3D’ plants when rendering with sun and shadows.

Anyone having a problem using the program must realize that such 3D programs can eat up your computer. You MUST have the latest Graphics Card Driver on your machine and the more memory you have the better off you are. Older machines can run these 3D programs but faster is better.

5 Stars Great program for the price
PROS: very full featured; easy to use; great price

CONS: my version lacked the insert floor option, but customer support solved that problem for me. Manual could be better.

BOTTOM LINE: I highly recommend this product.

OK, it’s not SolidWorks or AutoCAD, but who needs or wants a general full-featured solid modeling program with a big price tag and big learning curve to accomplish a very specific task - home design. The HGTV product is fairly simple to use and amazingly complete. You build 3D models with simple tools and then you can do realistically rendered views and walk-throughs. Once the model is complete, you can produce 2D dimensioned floorplans and elevation drawings from it. I am using it for high-level design and will leave the rest to an architect but you can do everything yourself including framing, flooring, roofing, electrical and plumbing.

I encountered a bug in the version I received, it omitted the menu item to insert floors (although floors are automatically inserted by default, just don’t delete them). When I contacted Nova Software, they acknowleged the problem and upgraded me at no cost to their companion Platinum version that includes landscaping.

To use photo-realisitic rendering requires some fairly serious computing power, especially to produce a walk-through, but if you computer is up to it, the results are great. The good news is that you can do 3D views and walk-throughs without the intensive rendering and you can therefore still get a really good view of how your design ideas shape up in 3D.

The manual could be a bit more complete. You will have to do some experimenting with the program to understand how to use some features. For example, you can use an automated wizard to create a basic house with all framing, roofs, ceilings and floors, but you probably won’t get exactly what you want. You can do the same thing manually, but the manual is not a great help. I recommend you create a house with the wizard and then view the properties of all the elements created to see what is in the model and what you will need to do on your own.

For the cost this is a fantastic product and very full featured - I highly recommend it.

2 Stars Not so user friendly
The program is designed more for someone very familiar with a CAD application. Unless you are very experienced in manipulating it, it gets very frustrating. I also find the help area greatly lacking. I only wanted to design a kitchen. It never lets me in the room to see what it looks like. All I can view is the overhead or a very far off view of the interior. Someone should create a program that allows you to start with a simple box. A box you can put doors and windows in and then decorate. I would not recommend this program unless you have lots of CAD experience.

1 Star So difficult I’ve given up
I was initially excited to buy this software thinking something from HGTV would be a great product & very user friendly. I was greatly disappointed. I’m fairly computer savy with Microsoft type products, but this was different. All I wanted to do was design a simple kitchen remodel. But after spending hours messing with this, I was really frustrated that I still couldn’t view the room. In addition, the cabinet sizes and other items aren’t able to be customized.

I bought this from a local office supply store and I’m hoping they’ll let me return it!

If I could use this program, I would be in a better position to review it. It’s too hard for me. Maybe, eventually, I’ll have the patience and enlightenment to decorate my house with the HGTV progrqm, but I doubt it. I’m very disappointed.

I have never felt compelled to write a terrible review for any product, but I feel that clarifying a few points is in order.

Before you purchase this software, be aware that to “paint” your own digital pictures with the “thousands of nationally known brands” as advertised, [...] So if you are trying to choose between different colors that are not on the same deck, or that are not from the same manufacturer, you are easily looking at doubling the cost of the software. I find that very disappointing and misleading. The reality: the program does not include “real paint colors from nationally known brands”, it includes one set of colors from one single brand: California Paints. All other brands (the company does offer many brands) will need to be purchased. Not a big deal for some, but important to know nevertheless, and critical for others.

All in all, the program may in fact be a decent purchase for you if the paint portion of the program is not that important to you or if you don’t mind purchasing add’l digital fans AND if you do not need any support from the company itself. In our case the bottom line is that the Home and Interior Painter portion of the software was critical but it couldn’t get the job done and we were not willing to spend an additional [...] to make it useful.

easy to use and calibrated my Samsung LCD monitor fairly quickly. I would recommend this product!

5 Stars Great for home picture use and scrapbooking
I was becoming frustrated because when I sent my digital photos out to print at my local store I never knew if the color and exposure would turn out correct. I would have to re-edit them and sent them out for print again because my monitor was an unreliable reflection of the printed picture. The X-Rite EODIS2 Eye-one display 2 changed all that. It was really easy to use and my pictures turn out perfect. This device does not calibrate your printer so my pictures still do not look right when printed out on my printer. However, I use my pictures for scrapbooking so it is a must that they do not fade so I have to send them out to be professionally printed (For example: Kodak, Snap Fish, CVS, Walgreens). So for me, it really didn’t matter that my printer was not calibrated with my monitor .

Just remember to install the software before plugging the device or your computer will think it is a storage device and you will have to restore settings to previous date to get the Eye-one to work.

I wish I got the Eye-one years ago it would have saved me a lot of money in re-printed pictures.

4 Stars Excellent results despite clumsy user interface
The Eye-One Display 2 (designed by Gretag-MacBeth and now sold by X-Rite) gets only 4 stars because the user interface is clumsy, but it gets that many stars because it does exactly what it’s supposed to do. It calibrated my photo/graphics quality HP LP2475W monitor so that the photos on the screen matched the photos coming off the printer. I hadn’t been able to do that with an old Spyder calibration device I’d used previously on another monitor. Although there wasn’t a huge difference between the color balance settings I got with the Eye One vs. the Spyder, the Spyder couldn’t set luminance (brightness). The Eye One 2 can do that and it was critical in getting the prints to match the screen.

There are two adjusting modes - an automatic one and an advanced one. The automatic mode is very straightforward to use, but the software did not properly adjust luminance. The “advanced” mode is what you should use. But there’s one issue you need to be aware of. The printed instructions are so brief as to be useless, and the on-screen instructions for the advanced mode are not at all intuitive.

There are three linked modules in the advanced mode, one for adjusting contrast, one for adjusting color/white point and one for adjusting luminance/brightness. You have to page through the directions for each module by clicking on an arrow at the upper right of the program window, and then you start the module by clicking elsewhere, on a “start” arrow on the lower right. Once the module starts you open your monitor controls and adjust contrast to match the bar graph on the screen. Each time you make a small adjustment, it takes the software a few seconds to recalibrate the bar graph, so you need a bit of patience. When you have a match, click on Stop to return to the beginning of the next module. You then read the next set of instructions, one short page at a time, and find the start button to begin the color module. Repeat for the luminance mondule. This is very clumsy. The on-screen instruction should take you from the instructions directly to the first step of the actual calibration routine. When the first module is done, the interfact shoudl take you back to the instructions for the next module without having to jump back & forth between an instruction window, a separate start button, and the adjustment process. (If you start a module without finding the instructions, the software will run in an endless loop while it waits for you to open up your monitor controls and adjust the settings for each stage.)

When the “advanced” calibration process finishes you get a report on screen with a chart showing the color gamut of the monitor as it’s been calibrated. It takes about 20 minutes to complete. You can name and save the monitor settings and set a reminder to recalibrate in a week or a month, etc. (It’s a good idea to recalibrate often as monitors shift their output as they age. In fact that’s the reason why you buy one of these devices for yourself rather than passing it from friend to friend.)

To sum up, the Eye-One Display 2 is a very competent device with a non-intuitive, clumsy user interface for the adavanced mode. Buy it for its competence, not its elegance. The ability to calibrate luminance/brightness is a critically important ingredient and its not available on the less expensive “LT” version of this product.

3 Stars Good but not great
Firstly, this product shipped with basically no documentation on how (and what) SW to install — and no obvious installers to launch upon inserting the CD into your computer. Basically, the critical piece of software you need to install is the “Eye-One Match 3″. Recommend visiting xrite.com to get the latest version of the Match software and install that.

After I got the software all installed, I got started calibrating my Apple Cinema Display monitor - I’m on a Mac OSX computer. The software offers two modes - easy and advanced. Since I know about color, I thought I’d head straight for the advanced mode first. The software itself does provide instructions to walk you through the calibration process, so that was nice to see — given the absence of documentation. After following the on-screen instructions to the letter, my “advanced mode” calibration resulted in a very cold/harsh (heavy on the blues) color profile that was just obviously off. Figuring I had made some mistake, I tried it again — in advanced mode. Same result. Next time I tried the “easy mode” - which produced much better results. The only problem is that you’re stuck with the program’s defaults for gamma, white point, etc. In any case, the easy mode appeared to produce much better results — at least for me. In the end, due to the drastic differences between the easy and advanced mode, and essentially being stuck with the easy mode — I’m rating this product as three stars. Honestly, I think there are better products out there for this kind of cash.

4 Stars Good for non-pro level
This is a fine device for what it is. Using it in “easy” mode couldn’t be, well - easier. And, the difference will likely startle those who haven’t ever calibrated a monitor or laptop before.

But don’t get carried away with references to higher level systems. It’s true that the Blue Eye (which is just a re-branding of NEC’s pro displays) uses this as their measuring device (I’ve got one), but that’s the end of the similarity. The NEC/Blue Eye system is a two-way communication between the measuring device and the electronics in the display. During the calibration, the two devices do a great deal of sophisticated measuring and actual adjustment of the monitor itself, rather than just creating a passive profile for the computer to read. After the process is conmplete, the monitor then makes ongoing adjustments between calibrations to compensate for the inevitable color “drift” that happens on all monitors.

(This is the reason for the reminders to re-calibrate, by the way, and why, if you don’t do it at least monthly (regardless of brand), you’ll have wasted your investment.)

So by all means get one of these and move up a giant step towards “what you see is what you get”, but know that this is a prosumer level device.

By the way, this alone will only make your screen look better (realistic flesh tones, etc.). For printing, you’ll need to learn about and use printing paper profiles. This is part of “color management”, which is a whole topic by itself.

I bought Windows Vista to use on my Intel based iMac, and it runs just as I expected it to. It is by no means a good operating system, but for those of you that need to switch over to Windows for a couple programs, this certainly will do the trick. The install was painless via Bootcamp, and the package comes with everything you need to be up and running in no time.

I have 120 GB Macbook. Got this 32-bit Windows Home Premium DVD and successfully installed it on a 35 GB partition created by Boot Camp. Out of 35 GB, Windows OS took 10.5 GB of disk space. Satisfied!

The OS installed flawlessly on my MacBook Air. No issues. Of note; the OS is delivered on DVD-ROM and not CD-ROM. I would ask Amazon to change their web-site info.

5 Stars Vista Home Premium with SP1 32-bit for System Builders - Review
Installed with little problem on HP laptop to replace the OEM 64-bit Vista OS that was incompatible with some of my most important apps (sucks).

It involved a bit more work updating the drivers and supporting bits, but it saved considerable money over buying the full version off the shelf.

This product is alright, I give it a 7 out of 10. Takes awhile to get use to. Some of the new flashy bells and whistle are unnecessary and takes up a chunk of memory. I use both Mac(graphic design) and PC(gaming). I can see how Vista is trying to integrate similar features of Mac OSX by trying to go all out on the visuals which is kind of cool and lame at the same time, if anything, Vista should have gone the simpler route. I love using XP because of its simplicity, I guess Vista is something that is forced upon us to get use to and maybe one day I’ll start liking it. I’m one of those guys that doesn’t like to be forced change when something isn’t broken and what makes me more skeptical is Windows 7 is coming out just around the corner(2009-2010). So what’s going to happen to Vista then? What gives Microsoft?
