4 Stars An Entire Collection of Mad Magazine on 1 DVD — Wow!!!
I remember seeing the Broderbund edition of all the Mad Magazines from its inception to 1998 and kicking myself for years for not buying it. But now there is the entire collection on just ONE DVD! My only complaint about the product is the packaging — a large box for one DVD-ROM that is wedged in a little slot that could easily scratch the disc — a small plastic jewel case to put the DVD would have been an improvement. Every MAD Magazine is here on this disc. The super specials are available, but only the parts that were new to the magazine, as these were compilations of previous issues. I started by looking at the issues that I remember owning as a kid that parodied TV shows like Charlie’s Angels and The Incredible Hulk and movies such as The Towering Inferno and Airport ‘79. Then, I started looking at some of the issues that I hadn’t seen like The Poopsidedown Adventure and A Crockwork Lemon — These were hilarious to read and well worth the cost of the DVD-ROM. And the great thing is that it will take me years to finish reading everything that is on this disc. Now if they would only put some of my other childhood favorites on DVD-ROM such as Cracked Magazine and Dynamite Magazine.
1 Star Crappy Quality
The Declaration of Independence looks pristine to these old fish-wrap pages.I half expected to find coffee cup rings and dried food that had fell from the mouth of the long ago reader of that particular issue.Shame on Mad Magazine for putting out such a low quality product, but they are the masters of squeezing out the last drop of blood from their loyal fans.
5 Stars Super gift
This was a gift for my son who is a big fan of MAD. He loved it and so did all of his friends. Arrived as promised.
5 Stars Absolutely Great MAD!
Absolutely MAD Magazine - 50+ Years
This was an excellent buy! I am thoroughly enjoying this product and
would recommend it to any MAD fan! It’s good to catch up and to see
the old magazines I remember reading as a child. It was fun to go
back down memory lane. Thanks MAD!
4 Stars It’s got the Kurtzman comics too!
What a surprise. Dyed-in-the-wool MAD fans are careful to specify whether they are talking about the earlier comic book incarnation of MAD or the later magazine. This DVD-ROM of “magazines” contains the comics too! That in itself is worth the price of admission. Which is a good thing, because MAD was mindless, safe, and very unfunny for huge expanses of its existence.
Scans look better than I expected. One thing that was always, always good was the Norman Mingo covers, and they look decent considering the disc contains 50-some years worth of magazines.
The packaging is poor. Leaves paper fiber on the disc; disc can and does move around in shipment; box contains no separate jewel case, so you’re left with the big clunky origama project they’ve packed the disc in. This is the big downside of this product, but I’m in a forgiving mood, seeing as I’m like a kid on Christmas morning having the whole run of MAD dropped into my lap.
4 stars, not 5, just so GIT doesn’t get complacent. Buy it if you like MAD even a little. Buy two if you like it a lot.
