User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Still A Great Game!
I always enjoyed playing this game when i was a child so i bought for my son. I have as much fun playing it as him. Still has a lot of features as the original, but also alot of improvements. Nice clean game without the violence & profanity. A must buy for any grade school kids!

5 Stars Its been years since I last played it, and it’s still the best!
The last time I played this game was around 1989 when I was in junior high, and it’s still the best game ever. My best friend and I used to play it all the time. I don’t remember if we ever beat the game, but it was always fun playing. I bought the 5th edition of this game, and just today I finally made it to Oregon! It truly is the best game ever created.

5 Stars Does version 5 Oregon trail work with windows xp?
I want to buy this for my kids new computer, but I need to know if it works with xp thank you

5 Stars No problems, son and his cousins love it.
I read some of the 1 star reviews - I feel sorry for them, but did not have any problems. Installed on both computers in our home, laptop and desktop running xp professional. No problems ever. It does take a long time to set up, so I do it and save it for my son who is 7. He needs a little guidance, but does it mostly himself. Lots of superfluous extras, but still good. My last experience was with the original version in sixth grade 25+ years ago on an Apple. This is MUCH improved. We really enjoy the game. If you buy a second small wagon, you can carry more. Buy oxen (6 or more for one wagon, 10 for 2) to carry the weight. Do not use the Conestoga wagon - it is too heavy regardless of what the pictures show. Do not buy any furniture or any heavy iron items. Hope you enjoy the game. Make sure you use your skill points at the very beginning, they really help.

5 Stars We love this game
I wish there were more history games like this. My kids love it. It is buggy. The trick is to save the file often so you don’t lose all your hard travelin’ work.

    User Ratings and Reviews

3 Stars It’s rather small for people with big hands.
Pros - A lot of cool features like the weight control, on-the-mouse dpi control, and being able to change the LED to the color you want. And it looks awesome.

Cons - It might not be best for people with big hands. I used to own a bigger mouse until I bought this one, and maybe i’m just having trouble getting used to it, but it’s pretty uncomfortable. My pinky and the finger for rings touches the mouse pad I have, which is only one more finger touching the mouse pad (only pinky hang out of the mouse) compared to my old one. It might not make much sense, but depending on how you play your games, it makes a big difference.

If size of the mouse is crucial to you, go to store and actually look at the mouse’s size. That’s what I should have done, but unfortunately I never owned a mouse that is small as this one.

    5 Stars Logitech G9
Logitech’s G9 laser mouse is possibly the best mouse I’ve ever had to date. It’s extremely accurate, which is a must for both headshots and for the graphics work that I do. The buttons are all nice and clicky and very responsive, and overall the mouse appears to be well- constructed. Read on if you’d like to know more.

The on-the-fly DPI adjuster comes in pretty handy, though you might just find a sensitivity level you like and stick to it. The mousewheel is another interesting feature, as you can shift it between normal mode for games and applications that make use of each individual ‘click’ of the wheel, and flywheel mode for scrolling rapidly. The button for ’shifting’ as it were is located on the base of the mouse, so its a little awkward to get to, but it keeps it from shifting on accident at the very least.

The weight system is a little dubious in its usefulness in my opinion, but I like my devices to be weighty so I made it as heavy as a could. There is some difference in handling between a heavy and a light mouse, however, so you might want to play with it. The weights themselves come in a cool aluminum box.

The swappable grips are another cool feature. One is larger and wider with a soft, smooth finish that’s designed to fit a little better in your palm. The other is more narrow and shallow, with a rough finish that’s easy to hold in a sort of “claw” grip. Personally I prefer the latter type, as my long fingers have always made it easier to hold a mouse with that claw grip. As a bonus, the rough texture also helps to keep my hand from sweating. Regardless of the grip you use, switching between them is incredibly easy and tool-less, so you can spend all the time you want testing them out. Keep in mind that both grips are designed to facilitate accurate, swift hand movements, and aren’t designed to be as ergonomically comfortable as, say, the MX revolution.

    5 Stars NICE PROUDUCT!
free shipping and it only takes about week of delivery , and i can say this is the best mouse i ever own, fast and reliable!

and i would’ve like to pay more , but the price is jus fair enough to buy, i would highly recommend this mouse to any gamers in the world~

    5 Stars G9
    great mouse

    lots of futures

    comfort

    and easy to use

4 Stars Has the best wheel I’ve used.
Finally logitech gets it right with their mouse wheel. The old logitech mice wheels were usually *ok*, but after a while would lose their accuracy and misunderstand when you were scrolling or not scrolling.

The new G9 though has the best wheel I’ve seen on a mouse. It has two modes of operation, which you can toggle on/off by a physical switch on the bottom side of the mouse. What makes this mouse great is both the quality of the wheel, as well as the fact that you can toggle between “clicked” scrolling and smooth scrolling. For gaming I always switch to clicked scrolling, for precise weapon changing; but then when I’m working or programming, I switch to smooth scrolling. With the smooth scrolling the wheel will continue to spin until you stop it or it runs out of energy. This makes scrolling through long documents really easy (and less noisy).

All in all, definitely a solid mouse, and is very useful for both gaming and non-gaming. I give it 4 stars instead of 5 due to the somewhat high price.

    Quicken Deluxe 2009

Quicken 2009 Deluxe Win CD Retail Small Package MIR.

    User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Quicken continues to be great for home finance
I’m not sure why so many are having problems here. I’ve been using Quicken almost since it first came out. Frankly the original functions … with on-line banking added later … would be enough for me, but I use it for so much more.

I am able to keep track daily of retirement investments and periodically check on credit cards. I love Quicken and have since the beginning. Probably the most useful program I have on my computer (after Word, or similar)

The only reason I didn’t give it five stars is that their help files aren’t all that helpful.

It is a bit annoying having to update every 3 years, but when one considers value received it’s a price I don’t mind paying. Now, if it were annually, I would be ticked.

I have to suspect there may be a competitors’ campaign to discredit this great program.

1 Star Caveat Emptor - bank download problems, bad mutual fund prices downloaded
This is an update for Quicken 2009 problems that persist from the 2008 version. I keep getting a CC-501 error for accounts linked to Fidelity Investments and most of my bank accounts. Quicken help with technicians in India did not resolve the problem, despite sending them specific connection files to troubleshoot the problem. I went through every process suggested on two different computers including reloading software, disconnecting all bank and brokerage accounts and then reconnecting them. I even created a completely new quicken data file so as not to have potential contamination from older data. These are clearly software problems. Why some accounts are OK and others are not is a mystery. The Quicken folks have not fixed these problems since I see other reviewers are still making similar complaints.

Another huge problem that took an hour to fix was trying to download historical prices for stocks and mutual funds. The download contained inaccurate data that messes up all data analyses. One can delete the problematic data, but if you download historical prices again, the errors return. A good example would be money market funds valued at $1 per share that get revalued to $4.67 per share. I rechecked all the fund names carefully and all were correct. Thus, this is a software/server problem.

I am not the only one with such problems, so don’t risk ruining your financial records with Quicken 2009 unless they fix the problems and you see than independent tests by an organization such as Consumer’s Union gives the software a clean bill of health. Intuit should also produce a product patch for these problems and get it to registered users for this and prior versions.

    3 Stars A Tad Buggy
My previous version was 2004 so just about everything was visually new to me. While it is pretty to work in (much more so that 2004) I do notice slight glitches here and there. They are only slightly annoying and I haven’t come across anything that prevents me from functioning.

Honestly, I expect more from Intuit when it comes to polishing up their finished products. (I am experiencing similar annoyances in QuickBooks 2009) For my money and my loyalty I would like to see them work harder to catch the pesky things before the product is launched to the general public.

    1 Star Total Disaster
I’ve been using Quicken for about ten years. I have never been “in love” with it. Almost none of the intrusive bells and whistles are useful to me. Much of the design and organization is, in my opinion, poorly conceived.

Still, I’ve stuck with it. I managed to get it set up (with a fair degree of effort) to the point where it would automatically download most of my credit card transactions, and the reconciliation feature works.

You have to upgrade every three years in order to continue to get the automatic download feature, so I paid my money and downloaded Quicken Deluxe 2009. It seemed to autoinstall over my Quicken 2006 just fine. But when I tried to use it, the trouble started.

Initially, it would not open my data files at all, stating that I did not have “permission” to open the file. So I had to right click the specific file and use Vista’s “open as administrator” feature.

It then converted my file — destroying, in the process, almost all of my historical data. Good luck doing your taxes! I do have hard copies of my bank statements, thank heaven, but my credit card statements only go back six months online. I also have backups of my Quicken files — trouble is, I don’t have a program that will run them anymore, since Quicken 2009 deleted Quicken 2006.

And, oh boy, if you want a lesson in frustration, just try to get any customer support WHATSOEVER from Intuit. You get mazes of unhelpful computer page links if you try it online, and mazes of interconnected automated voice messages on the telephone.

And the look of the new Quicken 2009 screen is horrible, even if it worked. Giant fat tabs, as if they had decided to dumb the old version down from 14-year-old to 8-year-old. Every time I have upgraded Quicken, the new version was worse than the one before — almost all the “new features” are worthless while the useful features are buried and hard to find.

I am utterly disgusted. I assume that, if I want to spend many hours of hard work, I could eventually get Quicken 2009 working on my computer, but I don’t want to spend hour after frustrating hour of hard work just to get a personal accounting program working on my computer.

This is the last straw. I’m going to try a trial version of some other software, starting with MS Money, and see if it can convert my old data files. If not, I’m giving up and going back to pen and paper!

In short, Quicken 2009 is significantly worse than nothing.

1 Star Don’t know if it’s good or not
never got Quicken, returned to you as undeliverable and now it is out of stock

    MobileMe Retail

MobileMe is the Internet service from Apple that keeps your email, contacts, and calendar up to date across your iPhone, iPod touch, Mac, and PC. You also get an elegant Gallery for sharing your photos with friends and family, iDisk for storing and sharing important documents online, and you can access and manage it all with a suite of desktop-quality web applications at www.me.com.

    User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Mobile Me is a much needed item.
Mobile me makes life much easier for both personal and profesional uses. I could not get along without it.

1 Star A WARNING TO ALL USERS OF MOBILE ME
IT IS VERY LIKELY YOU WILL LOSE DATA - EVEN IF YOU THINK IT HAS “IMPROVED”

It is probable that you will lose, or at the very least, lose ACCESS to, some or all of your data on MobileMe. Like everyone else, I have endured the instability of MobileMe since its launch. Yes, it has gotten more stable since launch, and yes, they’ve done an okay job of fixing some of the early issues that users have been experiencing. But over the past couple of months, I have had at least one instance a month of something not syncing correctly. One time it was calendar entries. Sometimes it’s duplicate emails. Sometimes contacts. Maybe they’ll sync from iphone to MobileMe and my laptop, but not my desktop. Or vice versa. It’s been fairly annoying to have to spot-check and babysit these syncs over the months (e.g., I input a phone number into my iPhone but never am quite sure if it’s going to end up on my computer. 95% of the time it does, but every once in a while it wouldn’t.) As annoying (and, really, inexcusable on the part of Apple) as this has been, it has never been disastrous, and always easily fixed with a quick support chat with support people (or reading support documentation online) that usually resulted in doing a forced reset of one or more computers, and then everything worked smoothly.

UNTIL LAST WEEK. I noticed my contacts weren’t updating from my iphone. MobileMe had them correctly, but my desktop and laptop did not. I had been on a trip to Europe, and had input a few new contacts while I was there, edited others, etc. When I returned home, I noticed that none of them were on my local computers. I’m going to spare the boring details — but after an entire week of troubleshooting with MobileMe support personnel, escalating it to their supervisors and members of the MobileMe engineering team, etc., I received the message that I am reprinting below, which basically states that the contact data on the iPhone and MobileMe can never be synced back to my computers, and that the only way to restore this data is to manually re-enter it. They were also kind enough to include an activation key for another year of MobileMe. Which at first I thought was a joke (”you can get a whole new year of data corruption and instability!” “Lose your data for a whole new year!”) but, sadly, is their idea of compensation for lost data, lost hours, and the irresponsible launch of a service that, more than six months after it debuted, is still mangling users’ data.

NOTE TO MICROSOFT: I hated Vista, and those “I’m a Mac, I’m a PC” ads were (I’m ashamed to admit) extremely influential in getting me to switch to Apple. I’m a huge Apple fan. I love my Macbook Air so much that I practically sleep with it next to me. And my iPhone is a close second. But not once — NOT ONCE — during my time with Windows Mobile and Exchange did I ever lose a contact, experience data corruption, or experience ONE SINGLE INCIDENT where data did not syncronize. NOT ONCE. You should exploit the instability of MobileMe for all it’s worth. Have the fat schlubby PC guy out partying with his friends, while the skinny cool Mac guy is at home alone because he’s lost all the contact information on his iPhone trying to sync to MobileMe.

    APPLE’S IDEA OF SUPPORT:

This is XXXX again with the MobileMe Support Staff. I have heard back from my Engineer who was working on your account and they have stated they were unable to repair the data and sync it down from MobileMe.

Unfortunately, the only way to resolve the inconsistent data error is to re-create the data manually on the computer and the reset the sync data to replace the data on MobileMe with that of the computer.

I am terribly sorry for this, I have gone ahead and issued you a MobileMe Activation Key for a 1 year free of service.

    Your Activation Key is: 3Q2TCXXXXXXXXX

You may use this key to extend your current account or activate/re-activate another account.

Thank you so much for your patience and understanding. I hope you continue to use the MobileMe services in the future.

    Have a lovely day!

    YEAH RIGHT.

    “Have a lovely day?” Seriously?

It’s like at the end “Airplane” when the plane has crashed through all the terminals and the stewardesses are telling the departing passengers “Thanks for flying TransGlobal.” (Though if it were Apple Airlines, they’d be giving a 20% off coupon for the next flight and think that they were being generous.)

    BOTTOM LINE.

Looks good, sounds good, and there’s no reason in the world (that I can think of) that it shouldn’t be reliable and stable. (For godssake, MICROSOFT can do it!) But for some reason it still is. And maybe you’ll be lucky and never have problems. But in my experience, it’s a pretty big risk, and losing important data is one of the most infuriating (and potentially devasting, depending on your backup scenarios) experiences a user can face. This is a substandard service which Apple has arrogantly marketed as reliable, and it’s a joke.

    3 Stars It’s OK
It’s ok. The galleries/iPhoto/Mac/iPhone integration is hard to beat for a Mac head. But don’t be stupid: if you just need an e-mail address, this is overkill. Amazon’s price now ($70) is the most I’d pay.

5 Stars Rocky start to Mobile Me - Now Sync works great
I have two apple laptops an imac and a pc at work - this service keeps my important work files synced between all of my computers effortlessly! When mobileme was first introduced there was definitely some glitches but now it seems to work great. I rate this 5 stars because it is such a simple complete solution for synching all of my important info and the initial glitches are gone.

5 Stars Situation Normal, all as expected
I order MobileMe (formerly .Mac) every year from Amazon because it is less expensive here than if I directly renew on Apple.com. I simply enter the authorization code on MobilMe and my renewal is applied on the correct date, renewing me for another year.

No problems, No hassles, just as I expected.

    Left 4 Dead

    Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

    Left 4 Dead

Set in a modern day survival-horror universe, the co-operative gameplay of Left 4 Dead (L4D) casts four “Survivors” in an epic struggle against hordes of swarming zombies and terrifying “Boss Infected” mutants. Developed by Turtle Rock Studios and Valve, creators of the Counter-Strike and Half-Life games, the latest AI technology allows for multiplayer games of one to eight players.

A new and highly virulent strain of the rabies virus emerges and spreads through the human population with frightening speed. The pandemic’s victims become grotesquely disfigured widely violent psychopaths, attacking the uninfected on sight. As one of the “lucky” few apparently immune to the sickness, you, unfortunately, are also trapped in a city crawling with thousands of the bloodthirsty Infected. Alone, you’re dead. But together with a handful of fellow survivors, you might just fight your way to safety.

Players can play as a Survivor or as one of four types of Boss Infected, each of whom possess a unique mutant ability, such as a 50-foot tongue lasso or a giant belly full of explosive methane gas. The gameplay of L4D is set across four massive campaigns. The zombie population of each mission is choreographed by an AI Director that monitors the human players’ actions and creates a unique and dramatic experience for them on the fly.

    User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Great Game - Fast Paced - Steam still Terrible
    Left 4 Dead

Great game if you like to mow down a zombie hoard with your choice of weapon (machine gun, shotgun, rifle and double handguns). The story line is broken down into sections. The action is almost non stop - if you pause to catch a breath the zombie hoard will find you and your teammates. The AI in single player mode is excellent. I found the 3 computer players to be pretty effective - however they almost always follow you through the choke points so you will bear the brunt of the surprizes (generally a good thing but I did jump a lot from these surprizes). The story line is okay - you are working to get to safety from the zombies - however, like certain movies the plot line really only gets in way of the action.

Frankly I appreciated the relative durability of the players from attacks - there are sections where an extreme number of zombies attack and on some it took me six or more tries to get through alive - that was great. Also there is a fair amount of replayability in the team mode - especially if you get on with one or more friends and create your own ways of defeating a playing a level - we often played wasteland which had the goal of killing everything before moving on (the computer does keep generating new zombies and new hoards if you stay in any place too long).

My only complaint is the Steam authentication system. I play my games on a laptop, often not connected to the internet. Too often Steam gives me some error message that locks out all steam games. This is unacceptable. I spent $50 to buy a game and Steam prevents me from using the game! I wish game developers would bag steam and go to the disk-based authentication - I have never been locked out of one of those games. To make it worse, Steam has the FAQ help section that is completely useless - all the solutions are “problems with my machine.” Steam Sucks!

Left 4 Dead - Great Game!

5 Stars Fast paced team based excitement and fun
I followed this game since announced and after a year of waiting finally had my opportunity to play. I was not disappointed. There are 3 types of play available from single player campaign, multiplayer campaign, multiplayer team vs team.

The game plays as a horror movie with scares of hordes of zombies attacking and a quiet period before the next strike. In the single and multiplayer campaign modes you follow a scripted series of maps and contend with zombies and boss monsters. Boss monsters are zombies with specific special attacks adding more excitement to your run from point A to point B in each map.

The Team vs Team mode allows players to take on the role of a boss monster to attempt to stop the “survivors” from making it to point B. Team speak is enabled for those with a microphone making coordinated attacks and defending against monsters easier to perform.

The game requires Steam which is an online game purchasing client. Steam receives high ratings for keeping all your Steam enabled games up to date with the latest patches automatically. Although the game does not require internet access to play it is required for the Steam client and multiplayer game modes.

I rate this game 5 of 5. An enjoyable game that suspends the user in a movie until the climatic end fight and escape.

5 Stars Left 4 Dead Review
Great game, not disappointed. To play online, make sure you have at least 1.5Mbps down speed/256Kbps up speed. It’s what I have and it does get quite laggy at times.

    1 Star FAIL
LAGGY, many MANY glitches and exploits, yet another game milking the tired Source Engine, dedicated servers fail, the lobby fails. Campaign mode gets boring and lacks challenge, granted you’re with competent players. Versus mode is a bust, you’re either on a terrible team which rotates due to ‘ragequitting’ so there’s no chance for even a good player to get anywhere when there’s no cohesion, or you’re on a good team in which there is no CHALLENGE from the other team for just that reason above. The game is a mess and they need to update update update.

Spend your money elsewhere. Perhaps on a game which was put together with a little more effort, thought and love. This game lacks originality and probably cost less to produce than the price you would otherwise be paying for a copy. Better yet, if you own a game that runs on the Source Engine just download one of the NUMEROUS zombie mods that are equally playable and entertaining.

    5 Stars Amazing game
I can’t stop playing this game. I had gotten out of playing a lot of video games, but decided to try this one, noe I’m hooked. The only problems I’ve had were having to put in the code for the window size that the game launches in so my monitor would display it and Steam’s servers like to kick you and sometimes kill the mic mid-game. This only happens in multiplayer campaign for some reason.

Drag and drop living, squirming, talking, globs of goo to build structures, bridges, cannonballs, zeppelins, and giant tongues so that you can direct the Goo Balls to their goal on the other end of the stage.

Massive Online Competition - Human players around the world compete in a living leaderboard to build the tallest towers of goo in World of Goo Corporation’s mysterious sandbox

    User Ratings and Reviews

2 Stars Great if you never downloaded the free Adobe Flash Player
Here’s a bit of a dissenting opinion on World of Goo. While the game certainly has some pretty visuals and music, the actual gameplay feels like I headed over to Kongregate and played one of the many physics-based Flash games there. You build constructs like bridges and towers in varying angles and degrees, get from point A to point B, then do it again.

Certainly the counter argument to this is that the level design transcends that simple play, but when the levels are put under the ruthless microscope of this weathered gamer and judged for their mechanics, I just didn’t see that materialize. The game quickly wore out its welcome just about halfway in (two hours or so worth of play), there’s just no meat to the core mechanics, and the game seemingly wants to coast you through by relying on it’s aesthetics and wannabe art house subversiveness.

Note that this game is a five-star game for a lot of gamers who will be drawn to the game due to the art direction and off-mainstream quirky swagger of the title. I personally just found it to be a boring, fairly banal puzzler that is more flash ( pun intended ) than actual gaming substance.

    5 Stars SMART & FUN
Before you know it, you’ll be hooked on this game! It’s very well-done, smart, fun & non-violent!

The only reason I gave it a 4 stars instead of 5 is because you could only create 3 player’s profile at a time which kinda sucks if you are more than 3 in the family.

    5 Stars Great Game… worth the money…
The game is worth the money. Fun, and works on a MAC or PC. Great way to pass the time on a plane ride…

5 Stars An underlooked gem of a game!
I got this game from Amazon for 9.99 through a lightning deal. My wife loves puzzle games and I thought it would be a great early Valentine’s Day gift.

The game has more than 40 levels and is very easy to learn how to play. There is a good amount of creativity in solving the different levels. The levels are a combination of construction and physics, but in a fun way. The soundtrack is also nice, and the graphics are colorful and fit the mood of the game nicely.

This is also available on the Nintendo Wii, but I have not played that version.

    P.S. My wife loves it!

    5 Stars Fun Puzzle Game
    Very cool puzzle game!

I bought this game for my wife for Christmas I ended up playing it just as much as her. You basically need to build these structures that the little oil blobs crawl across. Your structure needs to deliver the little blobs to a final destination. Sounds simple right? Well, as the game progresses they start releasing different kind of blobs that react differently based on the obstacles, etc. It ends up getting pretty challenging.

It reminds me of the old lemmings game which was also tons of fun.

The graphics are pretty good, and the game has a unique look to it.

Music isn’t bad or annoying either.

Nice change of pace from the standard shoot em’ up game. I would recommend this for any gamer.

5 Stars PC Owners Should Be Jealous!
We bought our Macbook Pro last year, then just added MS Office 2008 to it. I use PC’s at work with Office 2007. The Mac version is just superior, I wish my PC version worked like this. Everything is just simpler, the menus more intuitive.

Perhaps Microsoft is updating their PC version to look like the Mac one, but for now Mac’s are running the best version.

4 Stars Does Everything it’s Meant to Do.
I attend UNC-Chapel Hill, and bought this online a while ago. But then realized that most college campuses offer discounts on software such as this. i.e. When I purchased this item, it was around 95$ with free shipping. My school sells it to students for 26$ with taxes, no shipping or waiting required. I suggest if you are a college student, check with your tech support or student store and ask if they have software for discount.

      Pros:

      Word, Spreadsheet, Powerpoint.

      Ease of use

      Easy to install

Easily converts papers and projects into the program from downloads and such

      Cons:

      Microsoft made it

      5 Stars In my opinion….
This product is amazing. There are so many cool features that are not on the PC version. It is super easy to install and runs great.

4 Stars Works well, but a huge shift from Windows
I’m excited about switching to a MAC, but the interface for similar products on a PC are drastically different. Similar layout would help for those making the paradigm shift.

1 Star Painfully slow on a PowerPC iBook
I agree with the improvements/deletions and generally unenthusiastic comments in most of the reviews here.

I wanted to post a word (no pun intended) of warning to old iBook G4 users like myself — this new version was written for the newer Intel-based machines and is significantly slower than Mac Office 2004. Like 3 times longer to boot, 2 or 3 times longer to open a document (of any length), even significantly slower to quit. It may be just my machine/configuration, but it also seems like everything else I run with Word open also runs much slower than it does when Word is not open.

It’s gotten to point I wish I hadn’t made the “upgrade” from 2004.

    MLB Front Office Manager

    MLB Front Office Manager

Take yourself in to the ballgame! MLB Front Office Manager lets gamers do everything a real-life baseball GM can do to develop a team from Spring Training through a full MLB season, into the playoffs and the World Series. Using Major League teams and players, gamers will create their own fictional baseball universe and build their reputation into elite status. Gamers can replace aging veterans with rookies, scout the Minor Leagues, make blockbuster trades, and even participate in bidding wars for posted players from Japan as they make their way to the Hall of Fame.

MLB Front Office Manager offers two distinct game modes. Become the GM in Career Mode, and manage a team through a 30-year career that will hopefully lead to the Hall of Fame. As your knowledge and skill progresses over time, gamers will gain points to improve various areas and help the team win games as a result. With Online Fantasy Mode, create an online head-to-head management experience. With up to 30 Managers in the league, gamers can compete against friends to see who has what it takes to be the best.
A true baseball general manager also acts as a mentor in MLB Front Office Manager. Legendary Oakland Athletics’ GM Billy Beane will offer advice, encouragement and guidance as gamers steer a team through the intense competition that is Major League Baseball. Billy Beane is considered one of the most talented GM’s in baseball today and has turned the Athletics into a consistent postseason contender since being named GM in 1997. Now, in MLB Front Office Manager, he passes that knowledge on to you, the gamer.

    User Ratings and Reviews

1 Star A Terribly Flawed Attempt
Even though you can’t actually pitch, bat, or field in this game, the chance to simulate being a GM with real players, trades, waivers, free agents, the Rule V draft, and sabermetric stats, and then watch the games, sounded like fun to me. It’s not, though, because it doesn’t get any of those things right. For example:

    1. The statistics are incorrect. If your starting pitcher gives you two innings, but your team wins the game, the starter still gets the win. The game is filled with misinterpretations of the basic rules of baseball, like this one.

    2. There is no way to sort players by their skills. Clicking on each player in every league one-at-a-time, and scribbling the results on a spreadsheet, makes the game unrealistic and tedious at the same time.

    3. The players, especially the stars, seem to have been assigned skill levels based on random chance, rather than an appraisal of their abilities or statistics. Also, players’ skill ratings change dramatically from year to year, often with no relationship whatsoever to their age, health, or stats. (Using the realistic 20 to 80 rating scale is great, but the ratings the game assigns to the players are random, and change randomly.)

    4. Unlike in real baseball, you can immediately trade anyone you just signed as a free agent. In real baseball, you have to wait until midseason to trade a free agent that you signed that year.

    5. Unlike in real baseball, you can call up to the majors and send down to the minors players (who have options) without the mandatory ten day waiting period.

    6. No lists of top prospects, either in the aggregate or by position, are maintained. (I’m not convinced that the AI is sufficient to figure out who the top prospects are, anyway.)

    7. The AI is far more artificial than intelligent. Top prospects like Mat Gamel are placed on waivers in 2009 (without any reason, such as an injury). The computer-controlled general mangers lack distinct philosophies and strategies.

    8. Even if you create your own players or edit the existing ones, you cannot use your edits in all aspects of the game. The players you create or edit are restricted to certain game modes.

In short, this game is not worth your money; it wouldn’t even be worth playing if it were free. In my opinion, it is the direct result of the lack of competition in baseball games that began when MLB sold the exclusive rights to make baseball games to 2K Sports.

    4 Stars GM dream
Here is a game finally geared to the person who really doesnt care much for playing the game as much as setting up a team and dynasty. You can pretty much do anything. Its great that finally a baseball game has REAL aspects of contracts and the roster functions such as Rule 5 draft, Arbitration, the 40 man roster and player happiness. Player ratings are even much more accurate. Instead of the typical ratings of A+ or a 98, Players are rated on the Baseball scouts 20-80 scale. (20 is lower quality minor league and 80 being Major league all star)

The game seems basic at first, but after you begin the career it gets down to the nitty gritty. A lot of information is thrown at you and it can be a little overwhelming. I had the misfortune of buying this game without having a PC controller which made navigating the screens very difficult and almost annoyingly hard. (HIGHLY recommend the Xbox PC controller as the buttons on the game and in the manual are geared specifically for it)

Again this game is for the person who likes building up a team and loves the intracacies and in-depth realism of Baseball, the game of numbers and cunning, OFF the field.

2 Stars If this is the life of a GM, count me out
When I first heard about MLB Front Office Manager I was very excited. I’ve always enjoyed the management aspect of sports games and usually spend much more time managing and toying with the rosters than I do “playing” the sport itself. Enter MLB FOM. My sports prayers have been answered, right?

Not really. I’ve played through one season, and I can’t even bring myself to get through my second offseason as a GM (I’ll explain below). So with out further ado, lets get down to the good, the bad and the OMG what where they thinking?

    The Good:

The interface is clean and the options are incredibly realistic. It runs pretty smooth. Anything you could want management wise in sports game. Not only can you offer arbitration, participate in the Rule 5 draft, and scout the world for talent, but you can also offer incentives, control your 40 man roster, and run every imaginable aspect of a baseball front office. You get frequent email updates informing you of various things around the league, but these quickly become a nuisance.

    The Bad:

Where to start? The music is bad but that doesn’t really matter. Trades are horrible. Its nearly impossible to trade for anyone, even when they are on the trade block, unless you grossly overpay in talent. What’s mind bending is that when the AI makes trades, they seem to be almost laughable, but when a real player gets involved, the gloves come off. There is no way to gauge a players interest in resigning, an by the time you know they aren’t interested in your bid, they have signed with someone else. The menus are tedious and you can’t sort by things that really matter, like overall talent rating, the ability to hit for power or average, etc, on most screens. In fact, the only way to find out a players skill ratings is to go player by player and look at their info on a separate screen. This makes scouting for hidden talent in other teams farm systems incredibly time consuming and not enjoyable. The fact that the players don’t seem to evolve during the season regardless of how good or bad the play throughout the year. The only times I have seen ratings change is when the calender goes from Dec 31 to Jan 1. The big problem with this is that you can vastly overpay for players when you resign them or nab them on the free market. I resigned a 2B to start (rated 50, more on that in the next section) only to see him drop to 35 Jan 1st. he went from being my starter to not even making the MLB squad. Ratings should change before you resign players or sign free agents. Also, most teams seem to resign their free agents before the signing period starts, so there are very few good options to upgrade your team in the offseason.

The OMG What Where They Thinking:

The three things that drive me crazy in this game: The way you resign your own players, the ratings system for players, and random “game manager mode.” First, resigning players. Negotiating your MLB players is fine. What kills me is negotiating with all the minor league-ers in AAA, AA, A+, A, and SS (rookie league). The problem is that every single minor player will gladly except a minor league contact (does not count against your budget) for 1 year. If you offer more than 1 year they will reject you 99 out of 100 times unless you offer a lot more money. The problem? You have to go into every single player and offer them a deal. This wouldn’t be so bad if the game left you at the screen where you resigned your minor leaguer. But, instead, it jumps you back to the MLB tab. So you have to click on the minor league level tab every time you want to resign a minor leaguer. Whats worse is that you can’t even sort them by overall talent, so you have to look at each player individually before going back and offering a contract. So if you have 25 players at each minor league level (5) and then you have to click three times per player (once for the level tab, once to check their ratings and once to offer them a deal, you are looking at 375 clicks. It became so time consuming that I gave up before I finished with the AAA squad. Secondly, they ratings are very strange. They range from 20-80, where most games range 0-100. The problem here is that you end up with the vast majority of players falling between 45-55. Anything over 60 is a “great player” and 70 or over is elite. Somehow, Mark Texiera is only rated 60! In fact, the only player rated 80 is that certain picture the Yanks threw a ton of cash at earlier this year. Its just a very odd way to rank, makes some players seem ranked well below their skills and makes you feel like you are overpaying for everyone. Lastly, there is a mode where you can “manage” your team on the field. You can’t play anyone, its greatly sped up, you can’t really “scout” your talent, and the presentation is horrible. I really wonder why they added this feature at all. It would have ben better if they added commentators or something. Also, on a side note, you can’t even focus on certain players to help them develop. I could go on but i’ll stop.

    The Verdict:

If you are looking for a game that resembles work more than it does entertainment then this game is for you! You get the feeling as you plod along playing this game that 2K Games just threw this game out there to milk the last untapped segment of their MLB License. There are so many things that could have been better. One thing I didn’t rant on was the interface. They took this game directy from their XBox360 platform. I mean this literally, and they didn’t even bother to remove the xbox icon buttons telling you how to differnt things. If you do decide to get this game make sure you but a PC Xbos usb controller. Also, many of the features seem like they should have been side notes added to their main flagship, MLB 2k’9.

If you are looking for a great gaming experience that mixes fun, game play, and management AND you have a PS2 or a PS3, save you money and buy MLB The Show 09 when it comes out. Its the best baseball game out there, has many of the management features that this games has AND they have added the rule 5 draft and arbitration for the upcoming release.
